The exhibition Benches of the Brazilian
Indigenous Peoples: Human Imagination and Wildlife was
held in the Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, in Tokyo, Japan, from July, 30th
to September 17th, 2018, and received more than 40 thousand
visitors. The ninety stools belonging to the BEI collection brought to light
the cultural and symbolic values of these artifacts to the peoples that produce
them. At the same time, it has recognized a new aesthetic from a young group of
artists, which combines tradition with free creation. The exhibition layout was
signed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize
in 2013. The opening event had the presence of artist Mayawari Mehinaku as the
representer of native peoples of Brazil.
